A propos d'Inria

Created in 2008, the Inria center at the University of Lille employs 360 people, including 305 scientists in 16 research teams. Recognized for its strong involvement in the socio-economic development of the Hauts-De-France region, the Inria center at the University of Lille maintains a close relationship with large companies and SMEs. By fostering synergies between researchers and industry, Inria contributes to the transfer of skills and expertise in the field of digital technologies, and provides access to the best of European and international research for the benefit of innovation and businesses, particularly in the region.
For over 10 years, the Inria center at the University of Lille has been at the heart of Lille's university and scientific ecosystem, as well as at the heart of Frenchtech, with a technology showroom based on avenue de Bretagne in Lille, on the EuraTechnologies site of economic excellence dedicated to information and communication technologies (ICT).
Contexte et atouts du poste
This postdoctoral offer is part of the Inria International Relations Department postdoctoral campaign and supports collaboration with prioritized institutional partners, in this case the University of Waterloo.
The postdoctoral position involves conducting Human Computer Interaction research within the Loki research group, based at the Inria center at the University of Lille. This research project is a collaboration between Dr. Sylvain Malacria from the Loki research group and Dr. Jian Zhao from University of Waterloo (Canada). Research visits to University of Waterloo are expected.
Mission confiée
Summary
In this research project, we will rethink how scientific presentation materials (presentation, posters) are delivered at conferences by designing and studying novel interactive systems. It moves beyond traditional slides and posters to create more engaging, dynamic, and collaborative experiences for both presenters and audiences, leveraging emerging technologies such as extended reality (XR) and generative AI.
Context
Each year, an increasing number of presentation materials, such as slide decks or posters, are produced for events like scientific conferences [1], where disseminating results is a central part of research practice [2]. Crafting effective presentations is therefore important, particularly as they should not simply replicate the content of a research paper [3,4]. However, the formats used to deliver these materials remain largely unchanged and reflect longstanding conference conventions. Scientists cannot be blamed, as the tools available to produce and deliver these presentations have barely evolved since their introduction 40 years ago.
Modern XR technologies have been showing encouraging possibilities for streaming multimedia consumption [5] and we believe this could be even more beneficial for scientific communication. In this project, we will rethink how scientific presentation materials are delivered at conferences by designing and studying novel interactive systems that move beyond traditional slides and posters to create more engaging, dynamic, and collaborative experiences for both presenters and audience.
Research Objectives
- Identify and characterize the limitations of current conference presentation systems, including slides and posters, in supporting engagement, understanding and interaction
- Design and develop novel interactive presentation systems that leverage emerging technologies, in particular extended reality and generative AI
- Evaluate the impact of these new systems on presenter and audience experiences, including communication effectiveness and engagement
